James, 23, runs Alpha with his friends in Sheffield, UK. He is embracing the chance to be a part of a cultural shift in his local community. But where did James’ Alpha journey begin?
At the age of seventeen, James tried Alpha. He had questions about life that he wanted to explore, so his youth worker advised him to give it a go – it felt like a natural step in the right direction. What was unexpected, though, was that his whole family decided to try Alpha too.
‘My family actually decided to do Alpha and it was amazing to see them on this journey as well. For me, personally, it was a useful learning process, and it transformed my family – that’s why I am so passionate about it.’
James’ energy for Alpha has now found an outlet, as he helps to develop new ways of doing Alpha in a city setting. He is excited to be leading the drive to introduce Alpha to a new generation.
‘We are enjoying being brave and taking risks. Running Alpha in the city makes it feel significant. Anyone who makes a loud enough noise can gather a crowd, but there is purpose behind what we are doing – introducing people to Jesus.’ [continue reading here]

Growing up, my parents weren’t religious and the only time I remember going to church was for my brother’s christening. I always believed there could be a higher being, but I thought Christianity was outdated and irrelevant.
To me, Jesus was nothing more than a wise guy. I suppose I thought life was about finding success, and that meant having loads of friends, being well liked, and finding my dream job. I expected that once I had ticked all these boxes, I’d be satisfied.
When I was sixteen, a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer and died months later. I really didn’t know how to react and was totally shaken. I had nowhere to channel my grief, so I fell into a self-destructive mode. The easiest thing to do was to push everything down further.
I started going out way too much, drinking and dabbling in drugs. None of these things made me happier and I didn’t understand why. Even though the selling point is, ‘Take these and you’ll have a great night,’ every morning I woke up with the same feeling of emptiness.
When I was nineteen, I moved to Brighton to study Music Business. I kept up this lifestyle but I hit rock bottom a couple of months in. I was alone in a new city and I had no one to turn to. [Continue reading here]

When confronted with a personal tragedy that made headlines across the world, James discovered that his journey through faith was more complex than he had imagined.
‘Did I have a personal faith? No.’
James’ childhood faith, ‘inherited’ from his parents, flickered out as soon as he was old enough to decide how to spend his Sundays. Passionate about media and technology, at sixteen he secured his first job in a games store and replaced trips to church with hours spent working to sell the latest technology.
Always ready for a night out, at university he moved on to work as a barman for big festivals. ‘I pretty much partied seven days a week for three years.’ He never expected that five years later, he’d find himself en route to becoming a church minister.
When he was nineteen, an invitation from the curate of his old church sparked his curiosity. Ready to resist any attempt at ‘brainwashing’, he decided to see ‘what this guy wanted’.
‘Church felt strangely different to what I remembered. It felt like there was something else there that I hadn’t seen before.’
His life didn’t change instantly, but he decided to pursue the experience a little further. He continued to attend church and one week, he allowed the curate to pray for him. When he did, God seemed to ‘show up’.

What is Alpha?
Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. It answers questions like: "Who is Jesus?" and "Why did he die?". No pressure. No follow up. No charge.
Typically Alpha courses have around ten sessions that run for about ten weeks, with a day or weekend getaway in the middle. During sessions, people gather for about two hours and share an informal meal, sing a few songs, listen to a talk on how Christianity approaches the question at hand, then gather into small groups for discussion. The talks each week act as a springboard for small group discussions. It runs in churches, bars, coffee shops and homes all around the globe. Alpha courses are in 169 countries, has been translated into 112 languages and has had 22.5 million people attend worldwide. Alpha really is for anyone who's curious. [read more about Alpha]

Most of our churches are plateauing in growth, especially in seeing new believers come to faith. We wish our members would be trained in how to do evangelism in a way that really reaches this post-modern society - teaching them how to listen and lead people to Christ. HIM believes Alpha can help our churches do this, and will be holding an Alpha Course Conference on August 15-16. This conference will teach about the philosophy of how the Alpha Course works and how it can really transform our churches and work in all cultures.

This lovable white feline was not a planned pet to HIM staff member, Michele. After the passing of a neighbor, the cat suddenly migrated to her home. Michele took it upon herself to feed the lonely cat and they came up with the name, "Smores."
Smores enjoys her daily treats and sunning herself on the back patio. Watch out as she may bat at your ankles walking by or meow at you until you check out her latest hiding place. The charming cape was knitted by Michele's daughter, Adia.
Jesus (Still) Heals | Submitted by Adele
Last week, my best friend from Hawaii went with me to John’s village to join them in their Sunday morning worship. It was so wonderful to see John’s family and believers again. Ten months is a long time, but never too long when the love of our Lord joins our hearts together.
After singing and John’s message from the Word, I shared with the group the amazing things I had experienced being home in Hawaii [at the HIM Conference]. All that I had learned and received through laying of hands and prayer I wanted to impart on them. I laid my hands on each of the adults and prayed for the power of the Holy Spirit to fill them and give them courage to show and tell their people of our Father’s great love for them. It was a solemn moment.
Now that was last Sunday. Today, Saturday, John calls me telling me he has to tell me some exciting news of what God had done. Ready? Here’s what he said
Oh, EeDel, I gotta tell you what God did yesterday. I went to a poor village where I teach students and I met a man and his wife we’ve been meeting. One side of his body was like paralyzed. He couldn’t lift his arm and he couldn’t stand without help. He just sat. And his speech, you could hardly understand.
I had told him and his wife about Jesus several visits before. This visit I talked a long time with them and they believed and received Christ in their lives. I was so happy. When I looked at this man’s crippled leg, my heart was pounding really fast because I remembered when you prayed for us last Sunday about the power of the Holy Spirit in us and that we can pray for healing in Jesus’ name. I was so nervous, but I believed I received the power of the Holy Spirit and that Jesus Christ can heal today as He did before, so I had to pray for this man.
I asked the man if he believed that Jesus Christ could heal him and he said “Yes.”
I then I prayed for his weak arm. He said he couldn’t lift it up, but I prayed for God to heal his arm and...Oh, EeDel, God healed him! He lifted it up high above his head! I was so excited! I then put my hand on the man’s leg and prayed ‘In J name be healed!” I began to cry as I kept praying. My heart was excited. I asked the man if he believed God could heal his leg too and he replied ‘yes’ and he stood up and started walking! On his own! Yea! We were all amazed! I couldn’t stop jumping for joy, praising God! I didn’t want to stop!Today, I went back to see them and I met their children. The man was carrying things using that right arm and walking! All four of their children believed and received Jesus Christ in their hearts because they saw the miracle of healing in their father’s life. I will met them and teach them more of our Lord Jesus Christ everyday I am there. I am so happy! Even if I am tired from this hot season, I am so excited to go out and tell the people of our Almighty God.
I too was so excited, Beloved. This is only the beginning of more amazing things our Lord will do. He is the same, yesterday, today and forever...that includes tomorrow. Be ready for more. I will be.
Aloha for now,
Aunty Adele
A True Story of HIM Matchmaking | Submitted by Julia
HIM conference 2013 is a conference I will never forget — it changed my life. The Lord works in mysterious ways — and in my case, it is no different. Attending several conferences prior, I was expecting the usual motivational speeches and Christian fellowship that would refresh and empower my spirit. What I wasn't expecting was God flipping my world upside down.
During the conference I met up with colleagues from my work, long time friends, as well as church members. On the first Thursday evening I connected with my church's youth group, young men and women whom I have worked closely with for many years, led by our new youth pastor. Having to wait for some of the late attendees, the youth pastor, John, and I had a chance to chat. During the course of the conference we had several other opportunities to be together in group discussions or fellowship periods. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference — the speakers are truly blessed — and yet I also believe that the in between — the sweet dialogue, discourse, reconnecting with others about life and spiritual matters spring boarding from the seminars or speakers — is also amazing as well.
The last day — Saturday — one of the youth girls was debating whether to stay for the last session. John and I convinced her to stay, and we picked up lunch before the closing ceremonies. Having purchased our sandwiches we took the escalator to find a suitable eating area. The girl asked me where my favorite place was to go on a mission's trip. I replied that I had found the most joy going to Thailand and ministering to young orphans. I began to elaborate on how God worked through the team that went, how He used our hands and feet, and how we returned having been ministered to as well. This discourse (mostly me talking) lasted for quite a while and I had not yet eaten a single bite of my sandwich.
Ending my talk with an encouragement to find a mission either far or near — wherever God calls — I asked John to say what he thought on missions. He proceeded to take the mantel and continue telling her on how one can be a missionary in own’s own community. He used his own experiences to encourage her to be a light and minister where God has placed her right now — especially at her school.
I was shocked that our talks seemed so seamlessly to connect, but we hadn't planned it. I hadn't been looking for someone to build a relationship with — but God lit the light bulb in my mind. Someone once told me we should run hard and fast after God, and the person running beside us (also running towards God) is the person we should consider to begin a relationship with. During his talk I was saying to God, "Lord, he's running next to me! Ahh, this is strange and wonderful. But I now know that John is someone very special (maybe even special for me)."
My world was flipped — and yet it took another month for him to ask me out on our first date. Strangely enough, I didn't disclose to him this story of my revelation until several months into our dating, when we were both on the same mission's trip to Thailand (the one I had talked about to the girl).
It has been a year since last HIM conference and though I will be attending the opening session John will not be. However, there is a ring on my finger and a story of how HIM brought us together (well, mostly God).
Thank you,
Julia
